Being asked to deliver the keynote talk for the fantastic Dance UK organisation in London was a real honour and a great pleasure, and gave me the opportunity to air some thoughts on the importance of pushing physical boundaries and how I view injury as simply feedback – something that is not necessarily negative or positive in and of itself, but is an indicator that some aspect of your training process isn’t quite right.
Injuries, therefore, can be seen as signposts towards mastery; they indicate something you need to work on, and if you analyse carefully any injury that occurs you will be able to find a root cause and that cause might surprise you. Seeing injuries as blessings requires and generates a completely different mindset, one that learns from the incident and hugely reduces the negative psychological impact that can result.
